A Century Celebration:
100 Years of Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve
Last updated:
It’s one of the wonders of America – in 2025, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve! Not to be confused with Montana’s Glacier National Park, which was honored on a National Park quarter in 2011, this park is located within the Gulf of Alaska, and is accessible only by boat or plane. Although it wouldn’t officially become a National Park & Preserve for another 55 years, the area was first named as a national monument by then-president Calvin Coolidge in 1925.
Nature’s splendor
The story of Glacier Bay begins with its dramatic landscapes, carved by glaciers over millennia. When the park was established, it was primarily to protect the unique glacial and geological features of the area. Over the years, it has become a sanctuary for a diverse range of wildlife, including humpback whales, sea otters, and brown bears. The 100th anniversary of Glacier Bay is a testament to the foresight of those who recognized the importance of preserving this natural wonder.
Among Glacier Bay’s most notable features are its glaciers – like Grand Pacific and Johns Hopkins. Grand Pacific was named by naturalist John Muir in 1879. As it has receded and thinned over the years, it’s left behind smaller, separate glaciers. The Johns Hopkins glacier is one of few tidewater glaciers that is still advancing!
A Haven for Wildlife
One of the most remarkable aspects of Glacier Bay is its rich biodiversity. The park is home to over 200 species of birds, numerous marine mammals, and a variety of fish. The 100th anniversary of Glacier Bay is an opportunity to highlight the conservation efforts that have helped maintain this biodiversity. From the protection of endangered species to the restoration of habitats, the park’s management has worked tirelessly to ensure that Glacier Bay remains a haven for wildlife.

Adventures Await
For visitors, Glacier Bay offers a plethora of activities that allow them to immerse themselves in its natural beauty. Whether it’s kayaking through icy waters, hiking along rugged trails, or simply enjoying the breathtaking views, there’s something for everyone. The 100th anniversary of Glacier Bay is the perfect time to explore these adventures and create lasting memories. The park’s centennial celebrations include special events, guided tours, and educational programs that provide deeper insights into its history and ecology.
