Kicking Off History: World Cup 2026
Through the Lens of U.S. Sports Coins

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to be a landmark moment in global sports history. Hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico, it will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams. For the U.S. in particular, this represents a full-circle moment – it’s our first time hosting the event in three decades! The last World Cup hosted by the U.S. was the successful 1994 tournament, which helped ignite interest in soccer across the country.

The Legacy of U.S. Sports Coins

Several major sporting events have been celebrated through official commemorative coins. It’s a tradition that really took off during the modern commemorative era. Among the earliest designs was the 1983-84 Discus Thrower silver dollar, struck in recognition of Los Angeles Olympiad.

A few years later, the 1988 XXIV Seoul Olympic silver dollar continued this tradition, honoring America’s participation in the Seoul Games. And in the early 1990s, America’s pastime got the nod – with the 1992 Olympic Baseball silver dollar!

These coins tell stories – of the events they honor, and the moments in time that they capture. For collectors, a sports coin offers a great way to preserve a moment in sports heritage.

1994 World Cup: A Turning Point

When the United States hosted the World Cup in 1994, the tournament shattered attendance records and introduced millions to international soccer. To commemorate this event, the U.S. Mint released a series of commemorative coins – a half dollar, dollar, and $5 gold coin. Each piece celebrated the tournament with dynamic soccer-themed images.

Now that the World Cup is coming back to the region, these coins offer a symbolic bridge between the past and the present. For anyone eager to celebrate this important tournament, the 1994 coins offer a direct numismatic link to the sport’s journey on U.S. soil.

A Legendary Stadium & Changing Landscape

Even beyond events, coins have been released celebrating the stadiums and legends that sustain sports. The 1995 $5 Olympic Stadium $5 gold coin, for example, honors a venue that hosted unforgettable moments. The 1996 Olympic games were held in Atlanta, GA – and marked the 100th anniversary of the modern games, which began in 1896.

Similarly, the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame dollar marked a change – the first-ever curved coin struck by the U.S. Mint! It was issued to honor the 75th anniversary of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. It was followed by a second curved coin – this one celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

It’s exciting to see how a sports coin can honor both athletic excellence and cultural significance!

The World Cup 2026 – and beyond

With the World Cup 2026 upon us, there are plans for additional 2026 commemorative coins honoring the event.

The World Cup is more than a tournament – it’s a global celebration of unity, competition and culture. Commemorative coins hold a similar space, serving as lasting reminders of these experiences.
