April 19-25 is National Coin Week, but we’re celebrating all month with a special Gold Coin Sweepstakes to honor this year’s theme – Inspiration and Innovation at World’s Fairs, specifically the 100th anniversary of the Panama-Pacific Exposition. There was plenty to discover in researching this monumental event…

The event was held in San Francisco and was primarily designed to celebrate the triumph and amazing innovations of the Panama Canal. But the city had another agenda, too. They wanted to showcase how they had rebounded from the Great Earthquake which leveled it nine years earlier. The exhibits stretched for nearly 3 miles, and cost $25 million. Inspirational displays from 30 nations were on hand to please the millions of visitors who attended over a 9 month period. There was a state-of-the-art automobile racetrack and a transcontinental telephone line. Visitors could even take an airplane ride. The event also featured commemorative coinage of the great San Francisco Mint – the Granite Lady – one of the only buildings to survive the earthquake.
