Valentine’s Day has questionable origins that date back to ancient Rome. However, its first known reference as a holiday of romance was in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.

First published sometime around 1380, Chaucer’s poem, The Parliament of Fowls held the quote “For this was on Saint Valentine’s day. When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate.”

A shift toward romance

This referred to the way English birds paired off in February to lay eggs. It wasn’t long after this reference that some Europeans began sending notes to their loved ones during the birds’ mating season! By the time Shakespeare penned Hamlet around 1600, Ophelia referred to herself as the protagonist’s Valentine.
