Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Colorized New Hampshire Statehood Quarter - Littleton Coin Blog

With the thrill of the holidays behind us and a new year ahead, here in New Hampshire we’re ready to embrace the cold. From racing down ski slopes to enjoying local views, the White Mountains have so much to see and do.

If there’s one thing we know living in the snowy northeast, it’s how important it is to get outside and enjoy the winter sun. But that doesn’t mean we want to leave our collections out in the cold! In fact, there are plenty of ways to share your hobbies with fun winter collectibles.

Hitting the slopes

As New Englanders, we eagerly await the first snowfall of the year since it means that ski and snowboard season is finally here. In fact, during the 2023-2024 season, there were over 60 million visits to the slopes in the U.S.! While the modern snowboard wasn’t invented in Vermont – that honor belongs to Michigan – it was popularized there. This winter sport is so well loved that in 2022, the U.S. Mint immortalized it by putting it on the Vermont Innovation dollar. Just make sure that before you send snow flying, you’ve got your helmet on!

If you’re looking to relive the nostalgia of your youth, there’s always sledding. Today we think of wooden toboggans racing down hills in the cold winter air but this chilly pastime actually has a warm history! Sleds began to be used in Egypt around 1900 B.C. and were used to help bring rocks across the desert to build monuments for the pharaohs. While not exactly the white slopes we’re used to, it is fun to imagine flying down the hot sands of Ancient Egypt on a childhood classic.

One of the things that makes New England so great are the beautiful views. Whether you’re visiting Dixville Notch near the Canadian border or ice fishing on Lake Champlain, make sure to grab your camera. Novice and professional photographers alike make the trek from around the world to capture the natural beauty of the Northeast. And, even better, we can help you make a one-of-a-kind keepsake with our Custom Coins & Currency. When you personalize your own Showpak®, coin or note, the whole family can make winter collectibles they’ll reminisce with for years to come.

Settling in for a long winter’s night

Of course, not all winter activities are for the outdoorsy! If you’re like me, the perfect winter day means simply staying at home and sitting by the fireplace with something to read. There’s nothing better than finally getting around to a good book and being able to finish it all in one sitting while snowflakes fly. Whether you’re looking for your next page turner or for something to bring to your book club, there’s something for everyone in our online bookstore.

Or maybe you’re looking to spend an afternoon building something? You can take part in an age-old hobby with this Morgan dollar puzzle. Filled with imagery of the Wild West and the King of American Coins, this 1,000-piece puzzle is a great way to whittle away the time while Jack Frost is nipping at your nose.

Maybe one of my favorite things to do on a cold, snowy day is plan for a… well… not so snowy day! Whether by car, plane or train, I like to spend those notoriously chilly New England days planning my next trip. But with so many places to see and things to do, it can make narrowing that next destination down to one place almost impossible. So, until I can get everywhere on my list, I’ll use Littleton’s World Coin Clubs to traverse the globe.

But a favorite pastime of collectors everywhere – no matter what the weather – is pouring through their coin collections! Whether you need to fill in some empty spots (and I know a company that can help with that!), or want to help someone else start their very own collection, Littleton’s got you covered.

Snow much fun

As the cool weather settles in, I’ll be collecting these coins (and then some) for my more outdoorsy and homebody loved ones alike. Whatever this season has in store for you, make the most of it with winter collectibles. New 2025 issues, Morgan dollars, or one of Littleton’s exclusive series’… there’s something for everyone. So, this winter get out and have flurries of fun in the cold – even if it’s just through your coin collection!
