Have you found ‘W’ Mint Mark quarters yet?
It’s a good year to be a collector! First, the U.S. Mint announced that three special-issue Lincoln cents would be issued in 2019 – one each with the release of the annual Mint Sets, Proof Sets, and 99.9% Silver Proof Sets.
Then, from April 20-26, coin dealers across the nation participated in the first ever Great American Coin Hunt. Through this exciting campaign, thousands of collectible coins were placed back into circulation to generate interest in the numismatic hobby!
And now, first-of-their-kind National Park quarters are turning up in circulation!
Mint releases special quarters in 2019
At the start of April, the mint announced that of the 5 National Park quarter designs issued this year, 2 million of each would be struck in West Point. While West Point has issued quarters in the past, they – like the quarters from the Philadelphia facility – bear a “P” mint mark, making it impossible to tell the two apart. So that piece alone isn’t cause for celebration. But what IS noteworthy is that the quarters issued from West Point this year will bear a “W” mint mark!
It’s part of a new, ongoing effort to get the general public interested in our nation’s coins, and attract a new wave of collectors into the hobby.
And it’s working! We keep hearing from people who are scouring their pocket change. I know, I’ve set my pre-teen kids on the hunt. “Keep an eye on your coins for a while,” I told them. “There are going to be W mint mark quarters out there! If you find one for me, I’ll give you 50¢ for it…”
Ok, so it isn’t the $5,000 reward PCGS was offering for the first example they received for certification. But I’m working with a slightly tighter budget!
Kicking off the hunt
You read that correctly! This new mint creation caused so much buzz, that Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) was offering a $5,000 reward for the first examples of W mint mark quarters sent in for certification. Unfortunately for us, it was announced on April 12 that the prize had already been claimed. (Of course, if either winner is reading this… congratulations on your find!)
Although 2 million quarters might sound like a lot – it isn’t. Not when you look at the mintage numbers for the other circulation-issue quarters… Last year, for example, more than 237 million quarters with the design honoring Voyageurs park were struck at the Philadelphia Mint alone!
In all, there were 1.85 billion circulation-quality quarters issued by the Philadelphia and Denver Mints last year. Compared to that number… the total of 10 million W mint mark quarters that will be issued this year seems awfully small!
This hunt is doing exactly what it was designed to do – it’s bringing awareness back to the hobby. What are your thoughts on this exciting new development? Have you found any W mint mark quarters in circulation yet? If you do find any – what do you plan to do with them?

I have found 3 W quarters. The pacific war, the tree and another I forget. All from circulated grade. Nothing special, but was a cool find to me.

I have two w mint quarters but I found S quarters right around a million minute or a little over a million minutes this mess is a lot less than what the W quarters are

I got my love of coin collecting from my grandfather and mother. When my grandfather passed, she and her brother split his coin collection, and awhile back, she gave me the collection, and I have added everything I’ve collected to it. Oddly, I learned about the W quarters on Pawn Stars lol. To date, I’m happy to say I have completed both the 2019 and 2020 W sets, plus some duplicates. I’ll still be on the lookout, though!

I found two W mint marks. One from San Antonio Missions and one from Weir Farms. I had them graded one was graded at 58 and the other 55. Only worth about 25 dollars. I did get a star label and a first release label.

I found 2 with the w mint mark out of $300 in quarters
The only thing that seems fishy to me on the w mint mark 2020 s with the preview Mark v 75 is the fact on eBay there are certain dealers that have sold over five hundred of them how did they get that many coins and pretty much mint State condition without the help of either the mint or whoever supposed to be distributing them
I have found 5 War In The Pacific Quarters by looking at over 15,000 quarters from a bank over last two months.No luck in finding the prior two.
Holy Cow Dick, that’s a lot of quarters! I have a customer from out in Missouri who roll hunts like you. He goes through about $1,000.00 worth of quarters a weekend. So far he’s found 6 “W” quarters. With Nashville being one of the drop points for the W quarters, I have been very blessed to say the least. I have sold over 80 on eBay so far and I still have over 200 in stock. I search about 8 to 12 boxes per week and at this time I have been a hold on my other hunting (errors). Although I have found a few error W’s such as doubled ears, strike thrus and die cracks and die chips, and 1 missing the nickel layer on the obverse. I have submitted a few for grading to NGC and was blessed with 5 MS67 and 8 MS66. I LOVE THIS HOBBY!!

I found a W mint mark 2019 Weir farms quarter the other day to bring my count of total W mint mark quarters to 6 from 2019 and 2020 3 bat quarters, one war in the pacific, one San Antonio missions and the most recent find Weir farms. I found all of them without coin roll hunting just in General charge from store.

Since December, from a branch of a local bank, I found a box of $100. in quarters that were all “War in the Pacific” from the Philadelphia Mint. There were 20 West Point quarters in that box.I sold them to a local dealer for a very reasonable price. The dealer in turn has sold many of them at a price well below the prices on e-bay. I think that someone made a mistake putting 20 quarters in a box of 400.
Holy cow, Dick! You hit the mother lode! I speak with one of our regular customers from Missouri pretty often and he roll hunts like you. He goes through several hundred dollars worth of quarters at a time. So far he’s found one of each design and a couple of duplicates – I think his last count was 8 or 9. I got the American memorial w from a store and the marsh billing Rockefeller w out of a coin dozer machine so I feel lucky about that

2020 Bat W V75 quarter two months ago!
I just did tonight!
I roll search for penny errors, buy rolls of nickels looking for the reserve wrapped new coins (picking the best of the roll), and got interested in looking through quarter rolls looking for the best condition coins from years that weren’t saved like 1983 (finding mint or near mint coins from the 70s that had to have been sitting in a jar for 40 years?). I use a loop and look for errors. I don’t keep up with the numismatic news as I should, so when I found a River of No Return quarter with a W mintmark, I wasn’t aware of them until turning to the internet. Right now I am One for $400 (1,600), so I would say I am due, but the actual numbers of coins in circulation, one in 900 2019 quarters mixed with the deletion of the number of all dates in circulation, I guess I was lucky to find one. Fully lustrous, couple minor contact marks, probably a 63. If they were truly released to circulation, condition rarity should be similar to that of say, the 1950-D nickel for which there were widely publicized reports of their low mintage. These early finds will be $50-75 coins with circulated coins fetching $10-20, but that is my guess. You have to love looking at coins, a pastime, it won’t make you rich, but that isn’t what hobbies are for. Wash your hands and don’t touch your face when handling coins. If I am wrong about values, I am right about that.

Yes I have found 2 West point quarters. War in the Pacific and America the beautiful quarter but 1st I bought 1 Lowell West point quarter and the person sent me 2 of them cause I mentioned I was starting a collection.

So far I’ve found 22 W mint Quarters, all but three are San Antonio Mission. The other three are American Memorial Park. If any one is interested in trading a Lowell or River of No Return or War in Pacific, for a San Antonio Mission or American Memorial Park, I would make sure it is one of the best I have.

HI Susan, I say you should hold onto it and look for more! The US Mint is producing these “W” mint quarters in much smaller quantities thank the coins made at the Philadelphia or Denver Mints, so they’re pretty hard to find. Just found my first W quarter. After going threw 2k in bank rolls
Since last year I have looked at over 35,000 quarters and have found several West Point Mint quarters. . The last few weeks I have not found any. I found our that you can purchase, through the US Mint Circulating Quarter Bulk Purchase Program, a 200,000 bag of quarters for $50,000. plus a $1,500. handling fee. I have a feeling that several new businesses have purchased these quarters and looked at them with the help of their employees. You should check out what is available with a premium price on e-bay.

I just finished my westpoint series in air-tight cases. Now I just need 2 five coin holders or 1 ten coin (quarter) holders as I’ve finished 2019 & 2020 w series.
Also need a book specifically for the statehood proof quarters as I’ve finished their silver series but can’t find any specifically designed for that series.

Hi, the design of the American Samoa Quarter was finalized long before anyone knew about COVID-19 or it’s supposed connection to bats. I have been having fun searching for the quarters. They are terribly hard to find. I do have 2- 2019 American memorial park, 1-2019 San Antonio Missions 2-2020 Tall Grass prairie and 1-2020 Weir Farm. All in perfect mint condition. Have not found any W’s for the past 5-6 months.

I’m a long time Washington Quarter collector. I own every single Washington Quarter ever minted (including ALL proofs) except these “W” mint mark Quarters. All my Washington’s are either from mint or proof sets. The mint is actually driving me away from collecting Washington Quarters due to the amount of different quarters released each year. I’ve searched through thousands of Washington Quarters and found zero “W” mint marks. And, i refuse to pay the high prices for them on eBay.

During the recent coin “shortage”, I’ve been able to work out a deal with my bank. I obtained 10 rolls of quarters from the bank, go throug them looking for the quarters I collect. Then re-roll them & exchange the re-rolled quarters for new rolls to search through. I’ve been able to find find 16 of the “W” quarters in this way. I’ve got 4 of the 2019 designs (still looking for the “War in the Pacific” W.
I’ve even come across several “S” quarters this way. I believe that one of them is a silver proof “S” coin because of the highly polishes lustre of it. I can only imagine that it came from someone’s collection who needed the money; or, did not know the intrinsic value of the coin.

I have the Whitman National Park Quarters folder for the complete 2019 set of P, D, and W Mintmarks. However, I can’t find a folder for the P, D, and W quarters for 2020. Do you know of one?

My bank has allowed me to exchange 10 rolls of quarters for 10 rolls of quarters-at-time. However, they do not get regular shipments of coins. I’ve gone several weeks where they do not get new shipments. Other local banks are reluctant to exchange my rolls unless I’m a regular customer of that bank.
Fortunately, I’ve found 22 of the “W” quarters; but, only 7 of the designs for the 2019 & 2020 years. I still need the War in the Pacific, National Park and Salt River Bay to complete the entire 10-quarter set.
I’ve also found it funny, that I’ve found 25-cent pieces from the Bahamas, Jamaica and even a 1-Juan coin from China. And, I’ve found pennies, nickels, dimes and a black, plastic piece with a Bit Coin symbol on it within the quarter rolls.
That’s amazing Chuck! I talk to a lot of customers who “roll hunt” like you. They also find a lot of interesting coins, including multiple “W” quarters. Good luck finding the ones you need to complete the set!
My friend found 52 of them. No joke. A lot of them are mint.
